Nigeria players Wilfred Ndidi and Taiwo Awoniyi have gifted millions of naira to the Flying Eagles as reward for their qualification for the 2025 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations.
Nigeria secured their place in next year’s tournament after beating Niger 3-1 in the semi-final over the weekend and they have set-up a final match against Ghana in the WAFU B U-20 qualifiers.
Aliyu Zubair’s boys are fired up ahead of Wednesday’s final game with the monetary reward dashed out by the former youth internationals who currently ply their trade in England.
The team’s media officer, Sharif Abdallah also confirmed financial donations from other well-meaning Nigerians have been handed to the team secretary totalling 11.5 million naira.
Abdallah told OJB Sports: “We are having a great time in Togo and the boys are in high spirits. Wilfred Ndidi sent five million naira to the team secretary, the Deputy Senate President also sent two million naira.
“Taiwo Awoniyi has also reached out to the team and he sent 2.5 million, the Chairman of Lagos State Football Association, Alhaji Gafar Liameed sent 1million naira and a Nigerian coach based in Switzerland, Adeyemi Adedeji also donated 1million naira.
“All the donations are with the team secretary who is an appointee of the Nigeria Football Federation and the donations are just an act of goowill from Nigerians to encourage the team.”
Nigeria won the last WAFU B U-20 qualifying tournament in 2022 and they are seven-time champions of the Africa U-20 Cup of Nations.
They will be aiming to the reach the semi-final of the 2025 AFCON U-20 with the top four teams expected to qualify for the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile.
